Meinerzhagen - A special kind of orchestra took to the stage of the Stadthalle on Sunday afternoon: the 70 or so members of the Westfalen Winds all play in different orchestras, be it in the Bundeswehr Band or in a Munich music theatre. For 29 years, the musicians have traditionally met twice a year for an intensive week of rehearsals in Hochsauerland and the results can then be heard in the Sauerland in spring and autumn.

With strong cultural partners from the industry

This year, Westfalen Winds performed a family concert in the Meinerzhagen town hall with the support of the companies Otto Fuchs, Stauff and Menshen. Ceremonial, I. Entrada by Ferrer Ferran, Moby Dick by William Francis McBeth and the Dream Machine by Thiemo Kraas, a piece written especially for the Westfalen Winds, were on the programme.

The concert was not only a musical highlight, but also a special experience that transported the audience into a world full of stories and sounds.

Anna-Maria Wasserberg as a lively soloist

Anna-Maria Wasserberg led through the evening and read vividly in short sections from the story of Moby Dick or the Dream Machine. Her lively reading was the starting point for a fascinating musical translation of the story by the orchestra.

Masterfully conveying emotions

The musicians were masters at conveying the emotions and scenes of the story. The energy they radiated from the stage was overwhelming and the audience felt transported directly into the world of the whaling ship during Moby Dick, for example. The portrayal of Captain Ahab, who walked the planks of the ship with his wooden leg, was impressive - an image that was brought to life by the sounds of the orchestra.

Multi-award-winning guest conductor

The concert was rounded off with an encore: the Irish folk piece ‘Molly of the Shore’ by Graiger, which was particularly challenging for the clarinettists. The 40-year-old Mathias Wehr stood in front of the orchestra as guest conductor. He began his music studies at the age of 16 at the Nuremberg University of Music. Since then, he has won several prizes and has also made a name for himself as a composer.

The Westfalen Winds orchestra's family concert was a successful interplay of music and storytelling. It showed once again how powerful and close the connection between literature and music can be and how easily it can reach people's emotions, whether young or old.

Westfalen Winds' next concert is the New Year's Concert of the City of Wetter (Ruhr) on 19 January 2024! Concert tickets are available at https://www.stadtmarketing-wetter.de!
